No. 2627 / Pair of Mahogany and Gilt-Bronze Nightstands or Side Cabinets by Maxime Old

$37,500.00

A pair of open mahogany side cabinets by Maxime Old. Each cabinet is rectilinear in form, the open front fitted with a single adjustable shelf and defined by a finely molded frame. The case rests on a stepped rectangular plinth, raised on projecting blocks set with knurled cylindrical gilt-bronze mounts.

This spare, architectural detail is characteristic of Old's post-war work, in which ornament is reduced to a few deliberate points of metal against richly figured wood.

The mahogany is warm and deeply grained, French-polished across the tops, sides, and interiors. The low proportions and open construction give the pair an ease uncommon in case furniture of the period: they serve as readily as a pair of flanking nightstands as they do beside a sofa, in an entry, or beneath a window.

Each piece branded "Maxime Old" to the reverse.
